Sen. McCain Introduces Obamacare Opt-Out Act

U.S. Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and John Barrasso (R-WY) today introduced The Obamacare Opt-Out Act of 2014, which will give Americans the freedom to opt-out of the individual mandate for health insurance coverage required by Obamacare. This bill will allow an individual to either notify their state or the federal healthcare exchange or use their tax filing to opt-out of Obamacare and avoid the penalty for non-compliance. This year, those penalties can reach $2,448 per person or up to $12,240 for a family of five. Former Senator Phil Gramm (R-TX) discussed this idea in a Wall Street Journal op-ed last week titled, "A 2014 Health-Care Strategy: Freedom."

"The American people should have the choice to purchase health coverage without fear of their government extracting onerous penalties," said Senator John McCain. "A better, more affordable American health care system must be based around the fundamental value of freedom, and this bill takes a key step in that direction."

"After four years of Obamacare, there is solid proof that the law is raising costs and putting Washington in control of Americans' healthcare," said Senator John Barrasso. "Our bill will give Americans a way out from Washington's one-size-fits-all healthcare mandate. American families should be able to make their own decisions about what is best for their families."
